Introduction to GBR2010

Welcome to the 15th running of the Green Belt Relay. This year we look forward to seeing many new teams plus faces back from previous years. Inside you will find useful information about the relay.

The relay is officially supporting The Children's Trust and mencap. However, we also encourage teams to collect for their own charities.   It is important for the relay to raise money for charities, because without charities, this event would not happen. This is why we are allowed to run through and stop at many private places. So, any money raised directly or indirectly through the relay, please let us know about – every little counts.

Everyone who takes part will get a T-shirt and goodie bag. Stage winners (male and female) will receive stage winners T-shirts. The teams receive a green belt (1st overall), club shield (1st club), a pewter plate (ladies), a walking stick (vets), a corporate trophy, and a toilet seat (last team to finish the whole course). Team prizes are held for one year. Each winning team will receive a prize they keep and there will be a few surprise prizes awarded this year.

There are also extra team prizes for Kings & Queens of the Mountains, Mixed Team (at least 2 females to qualify), Team to collect most money for charity, and some others. For a full list, see the "entry" section of this website.

We hope everyone who takes part thoroughly enjoy themselves, yet always keep safety in the forefront of their mind. Remember, although we are all out to enjoy ourselves, we have to abide by the law, the Highway Code and respect the opinion and privacy of the people we come across on the weekend.

Some parts of the course will be marshalled, but we do ask others clubs to do their own little bit too. There will be arrows and sawdust on the course. However, they are not guaranteed to stay there. So we ask everyone to run with their maps, and for all teams to look after their runners.  Be careful, be safe and be friendly to locals. This way we come back next year and enjoy this event again.

To ensure the safety of everyone and to make our licence valid, we have produced a risk assessment for each leg.  As a part of this, we  give copies to each team so that they can brief their runners. I would ask that runners study their maps along with the risk assessment. If there is an "M" on the map it means danger, if there is a "H" it means even more danger.

Fifteen minutes before the start of each leg there will be a briefing, by the time-keepers, to all runners on that leg. It is compulsory that ALL runners attend these briefings. For your own and others safety.  We ask that you listen carefully to what is said. To us, the best part of the GBR is when we get everyone back safely to the Hawker Centre, knowing that you all had a great weekend and not been marred by any incident.

Lastly, let's all get out there, make some new friends and have a great weekend.
